3rd May 93.
Dear Sir,
In view of recent events, and the
possibility of some of the Australian
Governments adopting a system of note
issue on similar lines to that recently
introduced at the Cape of Good Hope by
Mr. Merriman, the Treasurer, viz, notes
issued by the Treasury to the different
Banks, against the deposit of Godment
Securities by them (the contract for the
supply of which notes has been
entrusted to ourselves), we trust you
will not be offended if we ask your
kind recommendation, should the
proposals in question assume a
definite shape.
We have had the pleasure of supplying
the Union Bank of Australia with
notes for very many years, and we
believe we may say that we have
given satisfaction. We feel confident,
therefore, that you will not object
to say a word for us, should
opportunity arise, and we assure
you that, whenever called for, our
best services are always at your
disposal.
We may take the opportunity of
offering our congratulations on the
apparently improved position of the
Union Bank of Australia, as a
consequence of the failures of some rival
establishments, though perhaps, as
very old shareholders, our feelings are
not entirely disinterested, and we
trust that an improvement will
soon be manifest in the Colonies,
and meanwhile beg to remain
Dear Sir
